Project: "L'isola delle rose. La libertà fa paura" by Giorgio Rosa
Who/What: Giorgio Rosa, an engineer from Bologna, who on May 1st, 1968 built an independent island, made of an iron platform that he himself constructed six miles off the coast of Rimini, in international waters. In the following months, that stretch of the Adriatic Sea near the Torre Pedrera soon became the center of an international conflict. On one hand, the actions of Giorgio Rosa created significant concerns for the Italian government, yet on the other, it was a pure expression of Rosa's hopes and dreams. A few months after the unveiling of the island, the Italian military forces occupied the platform and declared a state of embargo. Any attempt for Rosa to save the platform and the remains of his dream proved fruitless. In February of 1969, the Italian Navy arrived in Rimini and destroyed the platform completely. Download pdf
